Biography of Sheriff Tommy J. Gregory

 

Sheriff Gregory was elected Sheriff of Camden County in 2008. He began his law enforcement career in 1983 and started as a Deputy Sheriff with the Camden County Sheriff’s Office in 1987. He is a third generation law enforcement officer. Witnessing his family's passion for public service led him to his calling in law enforcement. Gregory's father and grandfather were State Troopers, and his father also served with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in Kingsland.

Sheriff Gregory began his career at the age of 17, while attending Brunswick High School. He worked as an undercover agent for the Glynn County Police Department, cracking down on alcohol sales to minors. He also interned with the Georgia State Patrol and United States Park Police. During his time growing up in South Georgia, Gregory was a member of the Brunswick Fire Department’s Boy Scout Post, played various high school sports and participated in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

After graduating high school, Sheriff Gregory worked as a Narcotics Agent for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. In 1987, he began a long career with the Camden County Sheriff’s Office. His hard work and dedication led to swift promotions within the Sheriff's Office. Positions included: Training Division Commander, Patrol Division Commander, and Chief Financial Officer. From 2005-2008, Gregory worked for the Kingsland Police Department as a Lieutenant, Field Training Officer, Patrol Shift Supervisor and Chief Financial Officer. He also worked for Coastal Georgia Community College as a Police Officer in charge of providing campus security.


Sheriff Gregory graduated with honors from Georgia Military College earning a degree in Criminal Justice. He is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society. As the former Training Commander, Sheriff Gregory believes in training. As a testament to his beliefs, he currently holds the most Georgia P.O.S.T. certifications of any law enforcement officer in Camden County. He is a state-certified instructor of Firearms, Speed Detection, Driver Training and Emergency Medical Services. He's also state-certified as a Communications Officer, Jailer, Law Enforcement Officer, Narcotics Agent, Field Training Officer, Supervisor, Manager, Executive, Senior Deputy, Chief of Police, Sheriff, Intoximeter 5000 Operator, Radar Operator, First Responder, Emergency Medical Technician, Health Care Provider, Firefighter, and External Heart Defibrillator Operator, just to name a few.


During Gregory's career he has been appointed to and served on various local civic boards, including: Camden County Extension Service Leadership System 4-H Program Development Team, Adult Volunteer Adult 4-H Camp Leader, Camden County Budget Review Board, Retirement Review Board, Healthcare Benefits Review Board, Library Board of Directors, and the Safety Review Board. Gregory participates in several law enforcement organizations such as the Georgia Sheriff’s Association, National Sheriff’s Association, Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police, Peace Officer Association of Georgia, and the American Deputy Sheriff’s Association, and many others.


Sheriff Gregory enjoys being an involved citizen in the close knit Camden County community. His community activities include: Waverly United Methodist Church, Kiwanis Club of St. Mary’s, Camden County Republican Party, Leadership Camden, Leadership Southeast Georgia, Navy League, Woodbine Masonic Lodge #326, Alee Temple, Shriners international, Gold Wing Road Rider Association and the Defenders Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club. Gregory is a supporter of Habitat for Humanity, Humane Society, the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association and other local groups.


Sheriff Gregory lives in Waverly with his wife Jodi. Together they have four adult children and two grandchildren. The Gregory’s enjoys riding their motorcycles, volunteering in the community and going on camping trips.
