CHIEF DEPUTY

COLONEL CHUCK BYERLY

Chief Deputy, Colonel Chuck Byerly began his law enforcement career in 1981 with the City of Brunswick Police Department after leaving the U.S Army Bomb Disposal Team. He worked for the Glynn County Police Department for seven years and served as a patrol officer, a narcotics investigator and a bomb technician.

In November 1990, Colonel Byerly came to the Camden County Sheriff Office where he first served as a jailor for 18 months. He then became an investigator and rose through the ranks to become Lieutenant of Investigations, Patrol Captain, Commander of the Special Operations Team, then a Colonel in command of the Operations Division.

Colonel Byerly briefly left the Camden County Sheriff’s Office (from June to November of 2009) to work with the regional communications center at Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Fla. In November 2009 Colonel Byerly returned to the CCSO and served as the Supervisor of the 911 Dispatch Center. Colonel Byerly served as Jail Administrator until January 1, 2013 when he was promoted to Chief Deputy by Sheriff Jim Proctor.

 

He is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) National Academy. and holds both a BA and an MA (Cum Laude) in Criminal Justice from Valdosta State University. Colonel Byerly holds Advanced Law Enforcement Certification and Managerial Certification. In addition, Colonel Byerly is a Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Instructor, a Bomb Disposal Technician, a state certified Jailor, a state certified Communications Officer and a RADAR Instructor.
