Q: Can I use text on my cell phone to contact Camden County E-911 in an emergency?
A: Yes, Camden County E-911 completed the necessary requirements to accept texts in 2021. We do encourage our callers to use voice calls but we are ready to accept text messages.

 

Q: Can I use TTY / TDD to contact Camden County E-911?
A:Yes, The TTY (TeleTYpe), TDD (Telecommunications Device for the Deaf), and TT (Text Telephone) acronyms are used interchangeably to refer to any type of text-based telecommunications equipment used by a person who does not have enough functional hearing to understand speech, even with amplification.

Q: What is the difference between a 911 call & non-emergency call
A:The Camden County E-911 Center has six 911 lines, and 8 administrative lines, for a total of fourteen phone lines that ring in the Center.

Q: What should the 911 number be used for?.
A: Any situation which requires immediate public safety response, whether it is law enforcement, fire, or emergency medical services. Examples are: Someone breaking in your house, your house is on fire, someone having a heart attack, a woman going in to labor. All of these examples, and many more are what 911 was created for..

Q: What should the administrative lines, (912-729-1442 is the primary admin phone line) be used for?.
A:Situations that do not require immediate public safety response can be handled by calling the non-emergency (admin) phone number. Some examples are: Needing a VIN verification, requesting a funeral escort, checking to find out if an accident report can be picked up. These types of calls can be handled through the non-emergency number, thereby not tying up a 911 line..

Q: Do non-emergency calls come in on the 911 lines?.
A: Yes, our dispatchers understand that when a person calls 911 the situation they are experiencing is an emergency to the caller. An example could be the neighbor’s dog barking in the middle of the night and keeping the caller awake. The caller could have a job interview in the morning and needs to get a good nights sleep. In their mind the barking dog keeping them awake is an emergency..

Q: Do emergency calls come in on non-emergency lines?.
A: Yes, sometimes calls come in on a non-emergency line and during the conversation the dispatcher is able to determine that this is a call that requires immediate public safety response. An example, person calls in to report the neighbors are outside arguing, during the conversation the caller reports that one person struck another, this would need an immediate response from law enforcement and possibly EMS..

Q: At times a dispatcher may ask a caller that dialed 911 to call back on the non-emergency line..
A: There could be several reasons for this. A good example is that the dispatcher was able to quickly determine that the call did not require an immediate response from public safety personnel. During the time of the call the center began receiving multiple call on the other 911 lines. The dispatcher need to deal with the other incoming 911 calls. This often happens when there is a traffic accident on the Interstate. .

Q: What is the difference between a 911 center and an E-911 center?.
A: 911 is the ability to dial a regular ten-digit number using only three numbers. E-911 has the addition of adding location to the phone call. The location can be a street address or latitude/longitude coordinates.
